This past weekend, I attended my 25th class reunion. Initially, I was on the fence about attending because I “see” most of my classmates on Facebook. However, I’m glad that I did because I got to see some people who I haven’t seen since graduation in 1993. I also got to fellowship with people who have known me most of my life. They were a few from elementary school and many from middle school.

The reunion committee planned three days of event. On Friday, we attended our high school’s first home football game for this season and some went to a nightclub after the game. On Saturday, we had family fun day at a local park and met later for dinner at new restaurant that has a bowling alley. On Sunday, some attended church and went to brunch. After Saturday night, I was done.

The best part of the reunion was seeing a classmate who is in the military and has been wanting a reunion for the past decade. He and I sat next to each other all throughout  high school because our last names start with “M.” On Saturday, I noticed that we were sitting next to each other at the daytime gathering. We both laughed once I mentioned it…LOL!!!

I didn’t see my best friend until Saturday night. However, she and I were texting each other about Friday night’s gathering and Saturday’s daytime event. We have the best conversations and laughs. My favorite line from her was, ” no one wants to deal with that Rottweiler!!!!”

Overall, I had a good time. Some people focused on who wasn’t there. I told them that they were there in spirit. With the multiple events, I think more than 50% participated. In the past, we’ve had a few mixers but usually the same 10-15 people attend. Since graduation, I’ve become friends with people who I never really spoke to in high school. Of course, social media helps us stay in contact.  I think that it is cool that we get to share our lives and to support each other decades later.

If you are able to attend your class reunion, please do so. If you had “beef” with someone, let it go. Odds are the other person probably has or doesn’t remember anyway…LOL!!!

Great Xscape Tour

Hey y’all…last week, I attended the “Great Xscape Tour” featuring Monica and Tamar Braxton. When the tour was announced, I got excited about Monica coming to my hometown. For whatever reasons, I missed Monica performing at the Essence Festival in 2010 and 2017. I think she is so underrated!!! Quiet as kept…Monica should have been the main act!!! #RealTalk

June’s Diary and Zonnique also performed. I missed their performances and only caught Tamar performing one and a half songs, “My Man” and “Love and War.” Monica KILLED her performance. She sang all of my faves, including “Angel of Mine.” She also did a tribute to Lauryn Hill. Again…she should have been the main act.

Xscape started their set with “Feels So Good.” To me, their set was not as polished as Monica’s. Moreover, they seem to be doing ALL of the stunts (starting with the baggy overalls being ripped off to reveal ill-fitting catsuits, the whose side is the loudest, etc…). Hopefully, once Kandi goes to Broadway, the other three can streamline their performance.  There still appears to be tension amongst the group. Kandi and Latocha are fighting for the spotlight while Tiny and Tamika hold their own. Tiny was clearly the fan favorite!!!

Xscape was promoting their two new singles that do NOT feature Kandi, “Dream Killa” and “Wifed Up.” Contrary to popular belief, I think the ladies will be fine without Kandi. After the concert, I realized this was my first time seeing an all-girl group perform live.

At least, I can say that I got to see all four members perform as Xscape. However, I am more excited about finally seeing Monica!!!

As an only child, I have always held my friends near and dear to my heart. Even in my 40s, I still look forward to hanging with my girls. In Girls Trip, the group of friends (The Flossy Posse) played by Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tiffany Haddish, and Regina Hall reminded me of my friends and me back in the day. Moreover, by the film being shot during the Essence Music Festival (EMF) made it even more relatable. I have been to Essence SIX times.

I loved how the film showed how the characters’ lives evolved from their college days to their present lives. One thing I disliked was that Tiffany’s character, “Dina” was supposed to be the same age as the other ladies. I would have preferred her to be someone’s little sister or someone who the ladies met later in life. Trust me…my bestie’s little sister STILL loves to hang with us!!!

We all have hopes and dreams when we are in our 20s but our lives do not always turn out how we planned it. “Ryan” played by Regina Hall appears to have it all. However, her life is far from perfect. A fact that she cannot hide from her from friends. Jada’s character, “Lisa” is the “mom” of the group. She is the only one with kids and plays the peacemaker among the ladies. Queen Latifah plays “Sasha,” a gossip blogger and “Dina” played by Haddish is the wild one. The ladies use EMF as an opportunity to reunite the Flossy Posse. ***SPOILER ALERT*** Ryan and Sasha have beef!!! The ladies play nice when they first see each other. However, the grits hit the fan when Ryan accuses Sasha of betrayal.

As with Girlfriends and Sex and the City, this movie portrays the dynamics of female friendships. No matter how much we pretend, our friends know the truth and love us unconditionally. Also, the movie showcases our interactions with men. Kofi Siriboe from Queen Sugar plays the love interest of one of the characters and their bedroom scene is hilarious. Warning: be careful when using grapefruit. LOL!!!

I also loved how Latifah and Jada played average characters. Watching them fangirl over Morris Chestnut and other celebrities was cute. One of my favorite singers and EMF fave, Estelle has a cameo in the film. They also showed the club, Vaso where I hung out with Estelle in 2014.

I always encourage ladies to go to Essence with their friends at least once. Girls Trip should definitely make you want to go and have the time of your lives. The movie captured the essence of sisterhood and the festival. If you have not already, go see Girls Trip and start making plans to attend Essence next year!!!

Ready for Spring

I am suffering from the “Winter Blues.” I am ready for spring. Luckily, we have had unseasonably warm weather in February. We even hit a record high of 82 degrees earlier this month. However, I am ready for consistent warm weather so that I can wear my maxi dresses and sandals. Once the holidays have passed, I am ready for spring. Not to mention, my birthday is in April.

Who else is ready for spring?

Looking Forward to 2K17

2016 has been an eventful year, full of ups and downs. The good outweighs the bad but I have definitely had some “lows” in my personal life. However, I STILL had an amazing year.

I will kickoff the new year with some (overdue) reviews, including my favorite items of 2016.

As always, follow us on Instagram at @nwunited for our current happenings.

Happy New Year and Be Safe,

Blogalicious Hangover

I attended Blogalicious for the first time and it was an amazing experience. I got to meet some new Content Creators and see some of my favorite people, like Kenya Johnson (Wicks and Wines) , Luvvie Ajayi (Awesomely Luvvie), and Pamela J. Booker (Koils By Nature). I thoroughly enjoyed the presentations and workshops. My favorites were “NeTwerking” and “Brand. Build. Blowup.”  Friday was a full day and I was tired.  Saturday gave me a chance to interact with the brands and fellow attendees.  By Saturday, I was hung over from all of the positive energy at Blogalicious.

In addition to the awesome presentations and workshops, the sponsor suites and vendor tables were EVERYTHING!!! Kia Motors (premium sponsor) had Africa Miranda (Txture Magazine’s first cover girl) as their special guest. She interviewed guests and hung out with the attendees. I got to test “ride” the Kia Sorento and the Kia Sportage.  I chose not to drive because I was “over” the Atlanta traffic…LOL!!!  Dove had a beautiful suite featuring decadent desserts, facials, makeovers, and a photo booth. Change the Cycle had doctors discussing women’s health issues and encouraged women to “Be Your Own Health Advocate.” They also offered a glam station and gave out cosmetic bags filled with goodies. Hasbro had a super cute suite featuring their newest toy, “Torch the Dragon.”  They even had a virtual campfire and S’more brownies.

Phonetic Eyewear sells eyewear that protects your eyes from the blue light from computers and other electronic devices. They offer non-prescription, reading, and prescription glasses. I fell in love with three pairs of glasses. I actually ordered a pair at 4:00am on Saturday morning. Be on the lookout for my review once I receive my first pair. Be sure to follow them @phoneticeyewear.

This was my first “blogger”conference. Last year, I said that I would invest in myself and attend Blogalicious to enhance my branding skills. I look forward to “netwerking.” This year has been filled with great opportunities; therefore, I am excited to see what 2017 holds for me.
